Steel Wire For Hard-Drawn Nails

These grades are chosen because they have a balance of strength, ductility, and machinability. The wire is then processed through a series of steps, including annealing, pickling, and drawing, to achieve the desired properties.

The diameter of the wire can vary depending on the application, ranging from a minimum of 0.2 mm to a maximum of 12 mm. The tensile strength of the wire can also vary, with some grades having a tensile strength of up to 3000 MPa. This high strength allows the nail to withstand huge loads without breaking or bending.

How cold drawn wire is made

First, place the wire die in front. A clamp pulls the undrawn coil through a die to increase length and reduce width to form the steel into the desired shape. Multiple passes through the die are required to form the cold drawn wire into the desired shape and properties.

Between each pass through the die, the wire is typically annealed to increase the ductility of the wire and change the properties of the steel. The steel can be annealed before, after or after passing through the die - it all depends on your final specifications.
